CALMING THE STORMS

Scripture Matthew 8: 23-27

There was this family and they decided they were going to have a big family picnic. They checked the extended weather forecast and according to the weather, it was supposed to be a clear sunny day. So, on with the plans.  Picnic day arrives and all appears to be well.  They get everything set up outside and the guest begin to arrive everyone is having a good time and all of a sudden a big storm comes up and the picnic is ruined.  This is how life is. Storms will come seemingly out of nowhere.  We can be staunch born again believers following the Lord as hard as we can, but the storm is coming, actually the harder we follow the Lord the harder our storms are.  The enemy is trying to shake us lose from God. As we already read in verses, 23 & 24 said; And when He was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. 2And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.

They were in the ship with Jesus and the storm came.  They were following The Master and the storm came!  WHY??

Because they followed! The enemy is trying to take our focus off Jesus and on to him, the circumstances that surround us; his plan is to get us off course.  The disciples allowed fear to arise BUT they remembered that the Master was with them.  In verse 25. they awoke him saying Lord, save us: we perish.  Where they went off course a bit was that they knew he was there but because He was asleep, to them He was not consciously there.  There will be times and for many of us there already have been when things are really rough and you think God does not hear you because you are seemingly not getting any relief or seeing any change, but; He does.  I don’t know why He works the way He does but I know He works.  Maybe we need to build character or maybe He’s giving us time to prove to ourselves through trials that He really does exist and has control over our troubles.  OR maybe He is just giving us time to realize we can’t fix it ourselves and waiting for us to call out to Him.  When the storms come to our lives, the best thing we can do is to call out to Jesus.  That really should be the first thing we do when trials come, but some of us have a tendency to think I can handle this.  We try everything we can think of but nothing changes and when we get to the end of our knowledge or ability, we call out to Jesus. We should have called Him First.  Mark 11:22 says; have faith in God.  That is the condition of having a real relationship with God; to trust or believe what He says is to have faith in Him.

When we become fearful in our storms, we just may get a rebuke as in verse 26. Oh ye of little faith. If we are believers and ask God to help us in our storms, just know that He WILL, get that faith muscle working!  He knows there is a storm going on, the winds may be coming at you with tornado force but it only take one word from Him and the calm comes.

Many storms that come in our lives may be of such magnitude that ONLY God can solve them. When He brings us through storms like that, He shows us that He is sovereign in our lives in every area. The sooner we can understand that the more victory we will have in our life.

When Jesus brings us through the storms in our lives victoriously, the result should be praise and worship to Him.

To go back to our original text, when the disciples awoke Jesus He asked them, why are ye fearful? He rebuked them for having so little faith, then He calmed the sea, in Mark 4:39 He said “peace be still” and the wind ceased and there was a great calm. If they would have had total faith in what He taught them they could have calmed the sea themselves, but, they didn’t believe they had the power by commanding the winds to be still in His name.  There is power in the name of Jesus.

If we have faith in His sovereignty in our lives, we can have that, same result in every storm in our life.

Here is what David says about our storms in Psalms 107:23-32.

23 They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters;

24 These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.

25 For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.

26 They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.

27 They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wit’s end.

28 Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.

29 He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.

30 Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

31 Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

32 Let them exalt him also in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

David had faith to calm the storms before Jesus came and we have full authority under the name of Jesus to calm our storms. PLEASE start using your authority.

Storms will come into our lives but when the Lord brings us through the storms, we do owe Him worship. That’s all He wants.

When we have storms in our life and we cry out to the Master He awakens and comes to our rescue if we just trust, have faith in Him He will deliver us from the one who wants to destroy us.

Let me close with this, sometimes our own actions bring storms into our lives.

I could go on and say a lot more but the message I believe that the Holy Spirit assigned me to give you today is to firmly plant the fact that Jesus calms the storms of our lives. For me to continue would take away the impact of what He wants to give you.

WORDS

Today I’m are going to talk about words.  You may think WORDS???  But words are very important and they have a lot of power.  We can bring things into existence, good or bad by our words.  In John 10:10b the scripture says “I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly”.  I want to do this teaching on words because I love you and I want you to be able to say the right words that will bring that abundant life into existence for you.

I am pleading with you to please keep this message in your heart! If you do and apply it in your life you will begin to see great changes in every area of your life.

The entire verse of John 10:10 says the thief does not come except to steal, and to kill and to destroy.  I ( Jesus) have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.  We are the they that He is talking about.   The thief that we are talking about here is our words.  Word are so powerful and we just say all kinds of negative things about ourselves, our children, our situations in life and never think anything about it.  Some things we say they have been copied from one generation to the next.  We say them without even thinking about it because we have heard it said by our parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles and many times we are stealing blessings from our children without even knowing it.  Maybe you have a husband or wife or some relative in your family that was an alcoholic or some other undesirable trite and you tell your child you are just like… whomever and you say it over and over to that child and when he or she is older they become an alcoholic and you wonder why.  It happened because you said it would, your words brought it into existence.  If you do have a situation like that in your family start speaking positive life changing things like you are a man after God’s own heart just like David or tell your daughters they are virtuous women like the woman in Proverbs 31 to your children and you will see a curse be broken.  If you have said or spoken things like that to someone in your family, anyone not just your children contact them and apologize, repent to God and make a declaration to God that you make those words void in the name of Jesus.

Let me show you just how powerful words are, let’s read Genesis Chapter 1 (READ).  If you noticed the bible kept saying “Then God said, Then God said”.    He SAID, so he spoke WORDS!!

God created the entire earth with words and he did it in 6 days, everything in the earth or on the earth was created by words including man.  In verse 27 the word says that God created man in His own image.  Since we are created in His image then our words have power also.  Of course we don’t have the exact same power God has but our words do have life changing and world changing power.  Not the entire world but our world.  In John 14:12 the word says “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do because I go to the Father.  Now again I’m not saying we are going to re-create the world in 6 days but that verse shows that we have a lot of power…In the name of Jesus.

Proverbs 13:3 says He who guards his mouth (tongue) preserves his life, but he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.  To guard our mouth is to be careful of what we say.  Speak words of life not death speak on positive things speaking negatively can not only destroy ourselves but others as well.  We must learn to be careful with our words because many times we wound people with our words.  Our words need to encourage not discourage.

Proverbs 18:21 says death & life are in the power of the tongue.  If someone or even yourself is sick don’t speak death over them, speak life!  Christ is the healer!  In situations that are not pertaining to sickness still speak life.  For example in 2009 when we began planning to go to Kenya if we would have started saying, there is no way we can get enough money to do that we would have been speaking death over the crusades before it was even birthed, in other words we would have aborted it.   As a result of our going 72 people were saved and 15 received instant healing, 26 people were delivered from spiritual bondage, 21 people were changed from Islam to Christianity and 31 backsliders were restored back to Christ. If we during the process of raising the funds to get there with some of the obstacles that arose to try to discourage us had we made a negative confession we would not have gotten there and what would have happen to the 165 people whose lives were changed by the crusades we held ?  They may not have turned their lives over to Christ.  We set the date in late 2009 and kept confessing that we are leaving October 21, 2010  and that was the date we left.  We constantly spoke positively about it no matter how it looked.  We CHOSE to speak life into the situation.

Proverbs 21:23 says Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from trouble.  The ability to control the tongue is a true sign of wisdom.

Proverbs was written by Solomon with the intent of helping us to live wisely & productively also to influence our thinking .   I do hope this message will help us all including myself to think before we speak which will change our WORDS, then our lives, and the world around us.

Continuing with WORDS.  Our words can bring us to riches or to poverty, they can bring us joy or sorrow, we just have to make a decision to speak life and truth in LOVE but to also speak with wisdom not just wagging our tongues just to hear ourselves talk.

Mark 11: 23-24 says, For assuredly I say to you, whoever says to this  mountain, “be removed and cast into the sea”, and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things that he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.  Therefore I (Jesus) say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you will receive them and you will have them.  This is what the word of God says, these are not my words but the words of a man who was under the divine inspiration of God wrote.  According to Webster’s dictionary divine means of like or from God, inspiration means any stimulus to creative thought or action.  So divine inspiration means that the writer’s thoughts were being controlled or stimulated by God.

This verse shows us when faith combined with words is put into action there is no stopping us.  The bible itself says that if we pray believing we will receive what we ask for.  I want to make one something crystal clear here, the things we are asking for MUST line up with God’s word or things will go very wrong if we are asking for something that we know is against the will of God.

Words can make the difference between being saved or lost for eternity, Romans 10: 8 -10 says, “But what does it say, That the word is near you, in your mouth (speaking words) and in your heart”, (that is the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth (speaking words) the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession (words) is made unto salvation.

We must stop bring curses over ourselves, our famlies and friends by our words!

If you are not saved won’t you begin today and speak the words that will give you eternal life with God the Father and accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior?

Come…
